Dear Moodlers

One more week and MootDACH 23 starts, time for travel preparations. Switzerland has some technical peculiarities that you should specifically prepare for.

  1. Switzerland has special three-pin plugs - and corresponding sockets (SN441011), into which a conventional German or Austrian plug will not fit. If you don't want to be suddenly without electricity, we recommend to pack a suitable adapter. For those interested in details we recommend: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SN_441011, Attention, this is *only valid for three-pole* plugs. There's no problem with two-pin plugs.
  2. As Switzerland is not part of the EU, roaming may not be included in your mobile subscription. WiFi is usually available in the hotels, at ETH there is eduroam. Everything in between might be network-free. If this is more horror scenario than relaxation for you, we recommend buying an appropriate data package on top. Alternatively, you can buy a SIM card upon arrival. There are three big providers (Salt, Swisscom and Sunrise - the cheapest here is probably a SALT prepaid, there you are with 10 CHF already quite good, with 20CHF you have virtually taken care) and many small providers (eg Lycamobile). There are many options. A good comparison (even if not quite up to date can be found here: https://landinglastminute.com/zurich-sim-card/)
  3. Bring your eduroam account with you. At the conference location you will be able to access the network with eduroam. For those who do not have access to eduroam, guest accounts are available. But ATTENTION: Identification via SMS is required (and this is not included in all cell phone subscriptions - so it may be worth checking). For details see: https://blogs.ethz.ch/id/2019/12/13/gaeste-wlan-public/
  4. If you have space in your luggage and a power strip at home, please bring it with you (don't forget to put your name on top!). There are various plug spaces available, but you (and your team) will be more flexible with a power strip.

We are looking forward to a great time with you in Zurich!

Antonia, for the MootDACH organizing team
