Improving error messages for grade imports

Hi community,

I'm not a developer but still would like to suggest working on a fix for an issue in the gradebook that would turn the world into a land of milk and honey for thousands of teachers all around the globe. 🙃

Currently, when trying to import csv-based grades into your course Moodle hits you with "supplied grade is invalid" 😱 if something is wrong with the data in the file. This mother (or father, which is equally bad) of all unhelpful error messages means that you have to search manually which cell might contain the data Moodle doesn't like. If you're experienced this might not be a big issue if you know what to look out for. But users that do this work once or twice a year have no idea what could be the problem here. And even if they find the problem the import might fail again due to another issue with the data so they have to start the search again until they've eliminated all the possible problems.

People have complained about this in the past, for example in the Future Major Features discussion "Import grades: Fix error messages" or the tracker issue MDL-46181 which has been closed unfortunately without having been resolved.

So, if you would like to improve the world by easing teacher's lifes, hit me up.

You're a real one
Harald
