Extend the support of multilang-filter v2

Hi,
here's a pitch idea for free use. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend the DevCamp this year. But maybe anyone is looking for a project for the DevCamp. I would be delighted if someone would work on some of them during the DevCamp... lächelnd
.. and of course: if you have any questions, I would be available for discussion.

Cheers, Martin

Description

The plugin "filter_multilang2" (https://moodle.org/plugins/filter_multilang2) is not currently included in the core. Before the Moodle User Association (MUA) was dissolved, there was an attempt to implement the plugin there (however, the project did not gain a majority there).

Current status

The filter is already supported in many areas, but not everywhere (please find further details in the attached file):

  • Participants: Course list of enrolled users
  • Course grades
  • LTI External tools

Expected behaviour

Even if the plugin isn't currently part of the core, its usability should be further extended.
Please find attached some examples, where the filter is not supported yet, but would be good to support it in future.

Dear Martin,

even worse, it had the vote (the MUA project) but it was deemed not suitable by HQ and therefore blocked.

The example you name are excellent, but they do not have to do with filter_multilang2. The core filter_multilang would fail there, too. And for example D there is already a tracker issue https://moodle.atlassian.net/browse/MDL-60595 but it was closed.
Would you mind opening an issue for each A, B and C, too?
I can try to work on that one.
But it's too 'little' to work on as a own standing project. And, after all, it's core. Maybe if someone is arriving only on wednesday and has time.

I'll pitch it for you though!

Hi Luca,
thanks for your feedback and the additional information on that, as well as to proposal the pitch.
I’ll create some tracker issues for the other scenarios and if anyone’s up for it, they’re more than welcome to get involved at any time. lächelnd

Cheers,
Martin

Hi everyone,

i already created some tracker issues on that topic:

* Support multilang filters on user's profile page (MDL-89044)
* Support multilang filters on enrolled users page (MDL-89045)

* Support multilang filters in course grades (grader report) (MDL-89046)
* Support multilang filters in course grades (in search fields on every page) (MDL-89047)
* Support multilang filters in grade scales (MDL-89048)

Cheers,
Martin

Although i love multi-lang., the challenge is that ultimately,. doing multiple languages in this way, isnt ideal and as manageable as it could be.

It would be best if Moodle ends up with a true multi-language system where there are instances of each field, with a language tag.

Use of a filters is a level of magic that is a step far for standard usage I think!

I agree with that. In addition the lang tags work with inline items only, you cannot encapsulate separate paragraphs at once by a language tag because they technically are inline elements that cannot be around block elements. This is something incomprehensible by most users that don't have a technical background.

Hi,
thanks to Gavin and Stephan.
You're right. It shouldn't be necessary at all, but nevertheless, using filters is the only way to deal with such situation where further user content needs to be multilingual. traurig

Fingers crossed - maybe there's another option in future for that. lächelnd

Martin

Hi Martin!

Another very useful area would be badges. And also with the known size limitation of some DB fields, filter_multilang2 has still limitations. filter_translations is working different, but not necessarily better.

I guess a general brainstorming about translations in moodle could be beneficial before working on these explicit bugs? If Moodle really wants to be multilingual, then it should handle multilingual content better!

Hi thanks for that.
Maybe this would be good topic for a discussion session on the bar camp?! I will pitch it there. lächelnd
