Initial situation
A building is a building ... in Biel
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biel/Bienne
Luca's housing cooperative (Wohnungsbaugenaussenschaft) aims to build a house on a lot that has been offered to them quite in the center of town, so it is also of public interest:
https://www.emilja.ch/de
Platform
For planning has been used a platform which is though more an architect's presentation than a co-operative and democratic invitation, WordPress was considered as well
Many processes (planning calls) have to be supported
Adaptation of Moodle for the special reqiurements of "Emilja", courses are rooms, "Homebase", "Ideenrucksack" etc. + a line-up of the different calls:
https://emilja.ch/platform
(registration invited)
Luca discussed the interface with Stefan Scholz (Bedecent), built on Boost union, Kanban coursetype
Within a course, repurposing a set of Moodle activities
Breakdown of the learning – what worked, and what less
When starting a project like that, first of all: Mail (communication) has to work in sufficient measure, prevent bounces, from the very beginning
Discussion
About three weeks for adopting Moodle to the needs of this project
Community building is in person, but needs also to reflect on the platform
A professional coach supported the project during its first two years
A new model for cooperativly planning urbanity

Discussing the common challenges of running Moodle for HE - what is the "HE gap"?
Interactive session where attendants shared their processes and needs.
Topics
Data integration - Course rollover
Course archiving - Security
Reporting & analytics - Student experience
Teaching & Learning -
Data Integration
How do you get data in and out of your Moodle?
- Custom plugin that connects to external database
- Data via Rest API to the campus management system
- Some LTI-Tools
- enrollments_courses with metadata
- a lot of external systems (wiki, learning tool, Maxima, Etherpad, Opencast, coderunner)
- Campus Management, BBB integration, Stack plugin, LTI connections, Git+Jenkins for update workflow.
- Course backups
- Course metadata, student enfolments, student grades
- Authentication data that goes
through
Moodle but not "in and out"
Mentimeter answers:
Data via restAPI to/from Campus Management System
We have a lot of external systems... Etherpad, Maxima, Campus Management System, Opencast, ...
Course metadata, Student enrolments, student grades
external wiki, learning tool
Archived exams
Usermanagement via MS Azure (oidc)
Shibboleth
No automatic course rollover. Lecturers can do backup-restore their old courses into their new courses to roll over courses.
enrollments .. courses with metadata
Some LTI-Tools (Username, Grades)
Course Backups
Connections to backend systems like BBB, Zoom, Etherpad, ...
Coderunner Backend
Authentication data (LDAP etc) which goes _through_ Moodle and not directly "in and out"
Campus management
How do you handle rolling over courses? How often? How do you handle resits?
- brand new server for each year (copy of the previous), custom scripts that take into account individual course preferences for rollover
. course lifetime of 3 years, teahcers imformed by email that htey are deleted, can prevents for one year
- button in Campus Management for teachers to create new courses. they get a new course each semester. they teach them to use import functionality to reuse course material, so most teachers do it themselves.
- template courses, managed by a team. they create all data and resources, and use backups. teachers can click a button in Campus Management that imports the template backups.
- need for a solution that doesn't leave data behind.
- tool life cycle was mentioned as a useful plugin:
https://moodle.org/plugins/tool_lifecycle
Mentimeter Answers:
Courses have a lifetime of 3 years. Teachers get an email that the course gets deleted. They can prevent that for one year.
Course life cycle Plugin (Tool_lifecyle)
different runners' simple, intermediate, with feedback , within three semesters
life cycle management
2nd Attempts (1st resit) are done as an "activity" within the same "course" in an academic year. Subsequent resits are in the "next" year's instance of the course.
Courses are created automatically each term through an integration. Teachers and students are enrolled automatically. Students have access for one year, while teachers retain access for five years
Enrollment via Campus Management System
Our courses exists "forever", we are just now implementing a deletion deadline which will be 6,5 years after the end of the course.
UK JISC recommendations for retention of (student) course content seems to be 6 years...we hold 5 years of copies
teachers have to import their old courses if they want to reuse their structure/tasks/materials
Every semester new courses will be created via Campus Management System
Currently: indefinitely Soon: 2+ years, with exceptions
Course archiving - How lond do you keep finished courses? Where?
- 4 years of archived Moodles
- for exams:
https://github.com/ngandrass/moodle-local_archiving
Mentimeter answers:
1 year for the student. Acces for 5 years for the teachers and we delete it after
With our new policy, we will keep courses 6,5 years after their end date. Currently, they stay indefinitely...
For learning courses, keep the courses as long as needed (several years) and then: if it's gone, then it's gone.
This is a test message
This is another test message
For Exams:
https://github.com/ngandrass/moodle-local_archiving
on the production system, after a certain time the courses will be deleted. Archive will be hold 6 month after delet the course
Course life cycle Plugin: archive courses older than 8 Semesters, delete archive 1 year later
Automatic course backups one a week to an external storage. Settings: keep 2 copies (max 5), never delete, backup also hidden courses
Security - does everyone use SSO? Multi-factor authentication? Additional plugins, bespoke solutions?
- Check student IDs (physical)
- MFA only for admins. Using a plugin on top. Trying to implement it for managers but it's complicated.
- MFA for every user... lots of helpdesk calls.
- In general MFA is a support nightmare.
- Need for a sudo like plugin for Moodle (there's one by Petr Skoda)
https://moodle.org/plugins/tool_musudo
Mentimeter answers
SSO for everyone, MFA for admins and powerful users
Multi-factor authentication
SSO & MFA. No MFA on exams instance.
Multi-factor authentication
SSO by Shibboleth (MFA by SSO)
MFA either in SSO IDP (Shibboleth / eduMFA) or within Moodle as an additional layer of protection
sso with auth system with mfa
Admins - yes Stuff, student - no... Plugin - manual review
Yes and No
MFA for everyone
Using MFA - was a pain to figure out how it works!
SSO via AzureAD (MFA is enabled, using oidc-plugins), local admin accounts also via MFA (core plugin)
SSO, no MFA
Azure Entra with MFA
Admin-Accounts using MFA-Plugin, other users MFA by SSO
Security - Do you audit user permissions? Risky Capabilities? Plugins?
- There is people who do all of this , other don't do anything
Mentimeter answers:
Yes, yes and yes
it would be nice
Admins - yes Stuff and students - no...
we have a team of developers and IT staff that is responsible for these topics
Users must have a university email address to access Moodle. External users are not permitted.
No, no, no ;)
Basically it's a matter of budget
"regularly", "err we allow some riskiness" and yes
We are struggeling to get rid of email accounts ...
Data reporting
- waiting for tool_monitoring:
https://github.com/daniil-berg/moodle-tool_monitoring
- Moodle report builder
Mentimeter answers:
Waiting for tool_monitoring!!
exporting data via custom APIs, some visualsiation in external tools like Power BI
external monitoring tool, sql
Massive gaps in Moodle core report builder…
Shameless advert for plugin statistics:
https://moodle.org/plugins/local_pluginsfetcher
Moodle report builder is a nice piece of software and usable for end users as well which is a relief
try to implement Dynatrace Ruxit Clients, but it is still on the way
Anyone in the room using things like Intelliboard _and_ happy with it?
We have a collaborative project involving several universities in Quebec and Catalyst Canada, I believe.
How do you make sure your LMS supports your student experience? Themes, course formats, learning design
- Boost_union themes
- Mentality of Moodle used to be "you need a custom theme" and "you need custom course formats" but now Moodle have a ux team and that's no longer necessary - Standard Moodle is much better now, has been user tested, etc. But some orgs are 'locked' into their custom themes and formats that they developed and that makes the ux worse.
Mentimeter answers:
Boost_union !
Is there more about Moodle than uploading PDFs....?
The pedagogical team is responsible for recommending plugins based on identified needs. Fortunately, some of our educational advisors also teach.
We have consolidated to 1 course format, with custom theme, which does some "cool" stuff to "tweak" the course layout within the course format. This was to stop "bad" decisions by teachers
grid is also ugly
Each teacher is responsible for their own course and can contact the pedagogical team for support.
Grid, onetooic, tiles
Other people are responsible for that!!
our teachers are responsible for learning design ... and they should be supported
Course formats can be so ugly (tiles...)
Teacher training courses. Support (pedagogical & technical) & support docs. Brownbag events & similar.
Each teacher is responsible for their own course and can contact the pedagogical team for support.
dedicated team responsible for training teachers on digitally-enhanced T&L --> Moodle course design etc.
Standardization, good global defaults, less experiments by the teachers + good support if the teachers want to
What teaching and learning tools have you added? Plugins? LTI?
- More than 100 plugins
- Way too many plugins...
- H5P
- About 15 activity plugins
- SCORM content
- Matlab, Reading lists TII, Zoom, teams, Peerwork
- Moodle core activities are from 2000 and not up to date. But it's hard to find contemporary alternatives for the same use cases.
- Lots of LTI
- STACK (
https://people.math.ethz.ch/~asteiger/2026-mootdach/stack.html#1
)
- Code tools: Coderunner, Code Expert
- Lti: Panopto, own learning tool, confluence, course registration from University system
- Admin plugins to improve workflows: lifecycle, running SQL queries from the frontend. Course activity plugins, question types, blocks, Level Up. Atto additions (colours).
- Problem: getting rid of plugins! Before you install the plugin, think about an exit strategy: will anything break if you get rid of the plugin? (eg with question types you can't). Also announce a piloting phase: is it useful, how can it be maintained, etc. After that period if you keep it then you are committed.
- Plugin deprecation process: yearlong process so they have time to announce it and mitigate anything that needs it.

React Discussion
React can be used from 5.2 onwards
Typescript to implement
There are still improvements in progress to make using React easier!
Has anyone tried using the new React interface?
What can we do to support adoption?
The
timeline block
is re-written with React right now and will be an
example
how to use React!
Andrew is on a mission to eliminate JQuery
React will be ready to use in 5.3!
Discussion with mentions by Philipp, Guy, Dani, Andrew, Martin, and Jonathan
Several said that until React adoption is complete and overall they will not try to play with it. Quickforms remaining is not an option and definetly a show stopper. One block is quite small, a whole activity transformed to React would be more meaningful.
Dani's very basic React test:
https://github.com/dpalou/dach2026test
It has hardcoded strings because Dani wasn't sure if it was possible to use getString from React code. The alternative was passing all strings as input props so they're translated in Mustache.
It is not supposed to be an example of how to do things. Just a personal test to play with it.
It also uses the routing system to create the page. In the README you can see how to play with it.
Is there already a loader for native ESM modules? Should be in the main branch, Andrew has been working on this right now.
The plan is to get rid of
Mustache
as well!
Composer Discussion
Any concerns with further adoption of Composer for Moodle?
What else?
It is not decided yet if Composer should be made a
requirement
or not.
(Installing 5.1 just throws a warning if composer is not used.)
Will all new plugins in the plugin directory be required to support composer install? Not yet, but is (loosely) planned.
Open Telemetry Discussion
What metrics do you wish you had? Admin, Health, Performance, Business
What else would you like to see in Observability support?
Modern API / Routing
Will implement OAuth 2.0 in Moodle 5.3
There will be an REST API Style Guide (Richardson Maturity Model Level 2)
Endpoints: user, course - More endpoints needed?
Discussion:
Migration tutoral is missing - what about tokens, capability checks, etc? Will be published
Will calling legacy webservices be possible?
Will the new API still support self documentation? Yes (Swagger).

- Plugins, SSO, VPL, etc.
Fragen ans Publikum:
- Wann wird geupdated und auf welche Version?
- Wer entscheidet?
- Anbindung an externe Systeme (z.B. Schul- oder Lehrraumvertaltungssysteme)?
- Welche Akzeptanzkriterien müssen bedient werden?
- Einsatz von bewährten Tools zur Unterstützung?
- Wer kümmert sich um die Dokumentation?
- Was ist mit Qualitätssicherung?
- Wie wird der Datenschutz sichergestellt (z.B. Drittanbieter-Systeme, KI usw.)?
- Wie geht ihr mit Shadow-IT um?
Offener Austausch:
Core-Changes in Moodle?
1.
Zeitnahes Update auf höhere Version, gemeinsame Entscheidung im E-Learning Team
Aktuell Moodle 5.1, im Setpember auf 5.2
Wann macht das Update Sinn?
In welchem Zeitraum (vorlesungsfreier Zeitraum)?
2.
Drei verschiedene Strategien probiert
Angebunden ans Moodle: Zoom, Opencast, diverse Synchjobs, CampusManagementSystem, etc.
Dreistufige Testinstanz: Test --> Staging --> Produktiv

Tobias Halbherr: Resource-Rich Assessment in Higher Education
Game-based Lerning vs Gamification

https://moodle.org/plugins/block_checklist
https://moodle.org/plugins/gradeexport_checklist
What is Checklist and how can you use it?
It is literally a checklist. Tick items off, it marks as complete ("completion" ist the main idea)
You can sort items as you like with the icons. Items can also be optional, this generates 2 progress bars
Activities from the course can be imported
you can hide or show any items on a checklist
you can also track activities and completion of them with checklist and use it as a restriction
chained checklists are (theoretically) possible, e.g. lists in different sections, nested in a master checklist
Completion aggregation even of different courses the teacher owns
Chose from the dropdown menu in settings if you want to have a certain course completion as an item on your checklist
Combine checklists for students and teachers: students can tick items off and leave a remark, teachers can see the progress, override manually and give feedback
In the settings, it is possible to set items on a checklist on private mode
you can link items to the calender
teachers can see the progress in block navigation. If you use groups, there is a dropdown to select
you can export the progress of your students checklist as a .csv
Bound to individual activity, not ready for groups which would be a major further development

From Plugins Directory to Moodle Marketplace

Moodle Marketplace is going to replae the Moodle Plugin Directory and includes the ability to sell plugins. The transition will start in the next weeks.
Plugins Directory has over 2700 tools listed and has lived since 2011
Plugins are no longer automatically published after a successfull review. In order to streamline the workflow for paied and free plugins, there is a seperate publication step after the successfull review.
Plugins directory had a lot of bloat (super old plugins, no longer updated...). Marketplace by default does not show people plugins that have been last updated 3+ years ago (but users can include them if they want).

https://github.com/idiap/multiauthenticator
ccountname = $User.username
LTI13Authenticator
(
https://github.com/jupyterhub/ltiauthenticator
) weiter.
image=nlp
image=nlp:slice_40
Jupyterhub & AI Integration
kurz die Jupyterhub-Extension jupyter-ai & Jupyternaut vorgestellt:
https://github.com/jupyterlab/jupyter-ai
NRW-Entwicklung
4 Unis bisher beteiligt an Jupyter.NRW
LMS-Anbindung wird an der RUB entwickelt
Als user zum Start: Spawning-Seite erlaubt Auswahl der Resourcen
block-Plugin:

Moodle Plugins directory: Course checker | Moodle.org (Moodle 5.0, 5.1, 5.2):
https://moodle.org/plugins/local_course_checker
This plugin checks different course settings based on independent checkers. Each checker is an independent subplugin. It will help you find misconfiguration in your courses and follow your internal guidelines by displaying a structured report. The checkers can be triggered manually an will be executed by the Moodle AdHoc task system. A check can also be triggered via the companion plugin block_course_checker_info.
The plugin is actively used at FFHS and regulary updated to work with new Moodle versions.
The following ideas for further development of the plubin where discussed during the session:
- check of internal links
- check of accessibility of links and other
- check of language (language-tool)
- check of correctness of content (is content up to date?)
- check deleted hidden activities

eledia.ai KI-Suite
Today: eledia.ai "Tutor plugin": Stack of four integrated plugins
Tutor: User interface
RAGingest: Extract course content (vectorization) (outside of Moodle!)
LiteRAG: RAG System (answers)
MCP: Connects to functions (makes Moodle actionable)
Free version is free and open to individual development (with an eledia-brand), premium is for additional functionality and service
Product for production to purchase licenses, not looking for funding
RAGingest is the crucial point: Open version some activities, premium extracts more; full RAG system externally (!) needed for many courses overnight, not doable within Moodle (!)
For KI-Campus (
https://ki-campus.org/
) a similar RAG-ingestion from Moodle was built a few years ago:
https://github.com/scieneers/kic-web-assistant/blob/main/src/loaders/moodle.py
Contact me, if you're interested in more details: @gamstc:matrix.org
MCP uses Moodle webservices
Main idea:
Make Moodle actionable through AI interface
– Controlling Moodle functions via AI, creating courses, structuring activities, enhance quality
Interface depends on the capabilities of the logged in user, as a techer e.g.
natural language commands (and dialog) for setting up a course
create activities
question: do i have to check returned assignments?
please enrol user X into course Y with the role Z

Bochumer Bildungszentrum e.V.
Projektmittel sind i.d.R. 1-jährig
Nachhaltigkeit
:
Veröffentlichung: Quellcode auf Github
Offene, freie Lizenz: Nachnutzung und Weiterentwicklung ausdrücklich erlaubt
Weitergabe: Handreichung, Doku, Veranstaltungen
Vibe-Coding erfordert neue Prozesse

Spezielle Kurse, Rechte, mehrere Fragensammlungen, usw?
Questions and Updates need to be shared between several teachers:
Use several question banks, sorted by topics, within the question bank questions have sub-topics as categories
Use mostly STACK Questions and mc
No more question banks in actual course, questions come from question bank course
https://stack-connect.oth-aw.de/partner/sasim/
: shared question banks for STACK (They are also recruiting :D )
https://github.com/maths/moodle-qbank_gitsync
Other university (ZHAW) created separate sections per department for courses that are living outside the life cycle and contain shared question banks, introduced new role question sharer, cannot edit or move questions
Override roles for other teachers to "student" so they don`t accidentially mess up your questions
New question bank architecture also offers option to give others non-editing teacher permissions, also for only one question bank if you don't like to share them all
Only he and his colleague share and edit the questions. They don't have a real procedure for who edits what and when. They just have a trustful agreement and inform each other.
In Moodle 5.2+
https://moodle.atlassian.net/browse/MDL-87264
Move entire question categories, complete with questions and subcategories, to a different question bank
